Five checks to make before using a stepladder

Most ladder accidents are avoidable, and many start with equipment that was damaged before anyone climbed it. HSE guidance recommends a quick pre-use check every time. Here’s a simple routine to follow.

  • Feet: check they’re all present, not worn or split, and clean.
  • Stiles: look for bends, dents or cracks along the sides.
  • Treads: make sure they’re secure, not bent and free from oil, mud or grease.
  • Locking mechanism: the spreader bars or locking catches should engage fully and hold the steps open.
  • Platform and labels: check the top platform isn’t damaged and the safety labels are readable.

If something’s wrong

Don’t use it. Label the stepladder as out of use and report it so it can be repaired or replaced.

Make the checks part of the routine

It’s worth adding pre-use checks to your team’s induction and keeping a simple record of more detailed inspections. Browse our stepladders if it’s time to replace old kit.
